I rec'd my new JD4300 w/ sync reverser a few weeks ago. Up until this weekend I hadn't really given it a workout other than moving snow and driving my kids around - works great for both!In reading recent posts and realizing my planned use for the machine I'm concerned that I might have made a mistake in not opting for the HST. The work I will be doing ( tilling, brushhogging and alot of loader work) will require alot of direction changes - reason for the sync rev.- This weekend I moved around 10 tons of sand and later some topsoil and noticed that I had to double clutch or ride the clutch somewhat in order to get a full bucket. I'm concerned that I will wear the clutch out with this type of work and after seeing a $1500 cost for replacement ( I think it was posted here), I began thinking that I might not have made the best choice in transmissions.Some specific questions I have:What exactly wears out on an HST? Is it difficult/ expensive to repair?Will I experience any less loader power with an HST? My 420 loader began to bog down on a heavy load of topsoil/clay, later I noticed that I was about 3 qts low on fluid - don't know why - couldn't see any leaks - would this have a bearing?Should I keep what I have or try and change?If I change will the dealer really let me upgrade if I opt for HST? I got a pretty good deal on the tractor I now have, is the policy to pay the list price difference? By the way it has about 16 hours on it.Your input is greatly appreciated!

I have been waiting to see follow ups to your posting, I'm surprised there have not been any. I cannott provide the techinal data you asked for, I can only say how happy that I am for spending the extra for the hydro. I was using the tractor for loader work the other day and tried to count the number of times that I would have had to shift, I lost track - GO HYDRO! ....

I have no experience of sync reverser or JD - though we are looking at JD as a possible replacement for our ageing and much used B1750HST which has just moved and spread 210 tons of gravel in 2 weeks. We did the calculation on how many forward-reverse shifts you do in loader work and went for HST. No regrets at all and it has held up well in our work here on a 25 acre private garden in Wales. I guess repairs could be expensive but we only had one problem some years ago which was fixed O.K. HST is a great help in pushing in to get a full bucket and the smooth control of motion is just what you need with that full bucket on bumpy ground. ....

I have the 4100 in hydro again with a loader. I believe the hst trans probably makes loading a bucket somewhat easy but heavy clay can bogg down just about anything. The hst trans is very very expensive to overhaul; can't quote specific numbers for you but my expectation is too never have to do that. I expect the hst to last the life of the tractor. I believe the hst's weak link is the casing which is aluminum. They have been known to break on the garden tractors. I had a JD316 with hydro for 12 years of hard use (with cat. O 3 point) and had NO problems with hydro which helped make hydro decision for the 4100 easier for me. As far as your cost to upgrade now, all you can do is ask the dealer. If you want to, do it sooner rather than later as JD's 4000 line is selling well and the dealer can probably sell your unit rather easily. You may consider selling it on consignment although that may take a month or two. ....

I have a 4300 with loader, this week end I moved 20 ton of #2 stone, good size stoneto large to shovel. I have filled tires and can't understand why you are having a problemgetting a full bucket with sand? Do you have proper weight? are you in 4wheel drive? Also,getting a full bucket required a bit of practice, you must also learn to tilt and raisebucket at same time, you can not just plow into it and hope to fill. Hope this helpsRichard ....
